Soundwave – Magazine Article
They met three years ago and now they are an international sell-out. Update tell us their story of success and more.
Singer, Amy Beven says the band is lucky to be where it is today. The competition is fierce, but Update never fails to get to the top. Amy said that the music comes easily to them. “We put riffs together, put in a drum beat, throw in some lyrics and with a few tweaks we have a song.” When the band first started out, they would practice only once a week, with at least five finished songs by the end of the month. We asked guitarist, Emma Potts, if each band member’s background influenced the music they play. She explained that they had each had different backgrounds, good and bad; some of them are an influence to some of the topics the lyrics are written about. The style of the music, the riff’s and beats are influenced by artists we have all grown up with, such as Green Day, Muse, Franz Ferdinand and many more.
The band have just finished their UK tour, Beth Thurtell, drummer, says “it was a good experience, hard work, but well worth seeing the fans.” It was a long tour, but Update want to do it again, but bigger, and around the globe this time. Bassist, Katherine Campbell, says Update are going on their world tour, starting in summer next year. They are beginning the tour with a few British festivals, such as Latitude, Glastonbury, Leeds and Reading, where they will be headlining them all. Amy says they have new songs for the tour and a few other surprises for the fans as well. “The gigs are going to be amazing, I can’t wait.”
It has been a year since Update first got their record deal and just the next day, they were being searched all over the internet, but why, and how so soon? We asked the band what actually happened that night. Beth said it was a wild night. They all went out for drinks with some friends and ended up going to a club. A few people there had recognised them and asked them to play at the night club in Norwich they were at. “We were wasted” Katherine added. “We played a few songs, in the middle of the third song, Beth decided to throw up all over the drums, and CONTINUED TO PLAY,” Amy said, “It was disgusting, went everywhere, but the audience were loving it.” They weren’t sure what happened the next day. They woke up the next day at Beth’s home. “I woke up covered in cans and people, I have never been so confused in my life,” said Emma. There was knocking on the front door. There were loads of reporters with cameras. Of course, Soundwave were there to get the news. The singer opened the door and told us all to “F*** OFF.” “oh my god, I am sorry, I couldn’t see, you were blinding and shouting at me,” Amy said to us. Emma told Soundwave that once they had been on the internet, they realised what had happened. There were video’s all over youtube of them smashing guitars, drums and even cars.
This wasn’t a good start for Update, but at least they got known for their raging behaviour, they got compared to the punk band, The Gossip, who are well known for hectic gigs. It took only a few months for Update to get their first number one and the video featured the outrageous videos that made them famous.
We asked Amy what life was like on the road and she said it was a good experience, “we get to know each other really well, we are all really close friends.” Amy went on to say that the gigs are so much fun, like “four friends having a party.” Katherine joined in to say she wouldn’t want to be in a band with anyone else. “We all have the skills and friendship needed to do this properly.”
Update are rumoured to do a duet with American pop band, Black Eyed Peas, we asked them what we should expect from this. Amy said “a lot, it’s going to be like nothing you have ever heard before, it’s two genres of music, colliding and creating something amazing, it’s going to be awesome.”
